Fishing for a living!

Living near the ocean affects this person’s life in many ways. The person seems to interact with many people because of the nature of the business he does. At this place he cannot put on clean and smart clothes because of the fishing activities. Therefore living and working at this place determines the way he dresses, the food he eats and the way he speaks. He probably has to speak loudly because of the many people around him wanting to buy fish. Being a perishable commodity and in great demand, he probably has to start his business early and close late on a daily basis.

  1. It is truly difficult to work in the fish industry. It is so nice to eat the fish but how often do we spend time to think about the people who make it possible for us to have it in our kitchen? I remember one day an old man walking around with fish after 8:00 p.m. trying to sell me some at a "give-away" price. Due to lack of technology (no cooling/storage) they often get exploited. I believe that just as some other sectors, lack of technology makes working in the fishing industry a challenge.

  2. How true, these people really work hard and get very little in return. I wonder, shouldn't the government intervene in this industry to ensure that the average fisherman benefits more from his toils? what strategies would be cost effective? maybe they should be encouraged to form co-operatives and the government should construct cold rooms that they can access and use.
